Jameis Winston's attorney threatens legal action against CNN over The Hunting Ground film
One of Jameis Winston's attorneys is threatening legal action against CNN if it airs The Hunting Ground, a documentary on campus rape.
Attorneys for the Bucs quarterback questioned the film's "complete disregard for journalistic standards" in an email sent to CNN and obtained Friday by the Tampa Bay Times. One of Winston's attorneys, Orlando-based John A. Boudet, pointed to correspondence between one of the film's producers and Patricia Carroll, an attorney who was representing Winston's accuser. The producer wrote that the film was "in the corner of advocacy for victims" rather than impartial.
The film has previously been shown in theaters but is scheduled to air Sunday at 8 p.m. on CNN. If that broadcast proceeds, Boudet threatened to pursue a libel case against CNN.
The film included the first public comments from Zephyrhills' Erica Kinsman, a former Florida State student who accused Winston of rape. I screened the film in the spring and wrote this. We also spoke to one of the filmmakers, and you can read about that here. FSU raised its concerns with the film earlier this week.
