Lavonte David gets 'excellent' interception off Jameis Winston
Bucs linebacker Lavonte David picked up his first interception of training camp Wednesday, anticipating a Jameis Winston pass to running back Mike James and picking it off for what would have been an easy touchdown.
"That was an excellent play by Lavonte," Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said after practice. "That was a bad decision by Jameis. Jameis had two bad picks today from his standpoint, but the defense is excited for them to make their plays."
Winston had another short pass during 11-on-11 work that was tipped at the line of scrimmage by a leaping Jacquies Smith and intercepted by safety Bradley McDougald. Koetter said David has responded well to a flexible role in Mike Smith's new Bucs defense that calls for him to do a bit of everything.
"They're asking Lavonte to do a lot," Koetter said. "He had a pick on that screen, and later, he had to cover Chuck (Charles) Sims on that long ball. The quarterback held it a long time, the back shoulder play. So we're asking a lot out of Lavonte, but you should ask a lot out of your best players."
