McCown notes: On Sapp, and playing QB in Hartford

Lots of cool, random Josh McCown notes to share from his opening news conference -- of course, his brother Luke was a backup QB for the Bucs from 2005-08 and is now a division rival as a backup with the Saints. Josh said his brother sold him on living in Tampa and the Bucs organization, that he and his wife nearly kept a house in town after signing elsewhere.

-- But how about McCown talking about his one year playing with Warren Sapp, in Oakland in 2007?

"One of my favorite game-day experiences is playing with Warren Sapp ... what a competitor," McCown said. "I'm watching this guy compete, and you're drawn to people that have that dog inside them, that fight. Warren is one of the greatest ones I've been around. You saw him, and just felt his juice every single game. He was getting after it. He was fun to play with."

-- Or McCown talking about his 2010 season playing as quarterback for the UFL's Hartford Colonials -- he threw for 10 touchdowns in eight games, caring enough about his commitment to play there he turned down an offer to join Lovie Smith with the Bears to honor his word.

"Sometimes in life, it's hard to follow the convictions you feel ... I'm thankful I did that because it shaped me to who I am," he said. "I don't want to make it sound like I'm some super-faithful guy. Every inch of the way in Hartford, I was like 'What was I thinking?' The bus breaks down going to practice, I'm like 'Oh, my gosh.' You go to the equipment room and say 'Hey, I need a pair of shorts.' They say 'Well, there's a Dick's Sporting Goods down the road.' It was a different experience, but I treasure it."

-- Lovie Smith's made it clear that McCown is his guy -- there's a trust and familiarity there in McCown as a leader as much as a quarterback. That's enough to override the fact that Glennon actually has more stats from just his rookie season than McCown has totaled in the last six years. Glennon had 19 touchdowns and 2,608 yards last year, while McCown has totaled 15 touchdowns and 2,243 since the 2008 season.

-- McCown said he's been very impressed, just in the past two days, with QBs coach Marcus Arroyo. It's worth noting that McCown is actually six months older than Arroyo. Both are 34 ...
