Push-ups the punishment on Saturday, even for Schiano

With the Bucs practicing for the fourth straight day, coach Greg Schiano said he wanted to do something Saturday that could “keep them going.”

So during the live play-it periods, where the team competed in 11-on-11 situations in pads, Schiano had the “losers” of each drill, the offense or defense, do push-ups. “Figured since we’re going to make it a competition and have a winner and loser, let’s have a little prize for the winner, and a punishment for the loser, probably a better way to say it,” Schiano said. “It was good, because it was very balanced… I had a little fun with it.”

Schiano said players were asked to do 10 push-ups, but quipped “I’m sure there were a few liberties taken.”

Schiano, surprisingly, also got in the act, getting down and doing several push-ups in the middle of a huddle.

“I’ve got to pay for all our sins,” he said, smiling

Other notes for Saturday's workout

*WR Vincent Jackson missed Saturday’s practice as his wife was giving birth to a baby boy, Schiano said. But with Jackson out, WR Chris Owusu continued his impressive camp, making several nice catches, including a 57-yard touchdown down the left sideline from QB Josh Freeman.

"I just want to go out there and make plays, make the most of my opportunities," Owusu said. "Playing with the 1s, you have to increase your level of play." Said Schiano:  “He did make some plays. I wasn’t studying Chris, but he jumped out to me a few times as well.” Owusu also caught a touchdown pass during the team’s end-of-game situation drill, as did WR Derek Hagan who made a grab in heavy traffic over the middle. “That was impressive,” Schiano said.

*Schiano said WR Mike Williams, who left Friday’s practice with a slight hamstring strain, lobbied to return Saturday. But Schiano said they were being “prudent” in holding him out until Monday.

“That guy loves football and he knew today was going to be a competition day,” Schiano said. “It’s like taking a guy out of the park and sending him home.”

CB Johnthan Banks (hamstring) missed the second straight practice, but will likely return Monday. DE Adrian Clayborn (groin) did more work on the side field, with Schiano saying he’ll be back sometime next week, and is not ruled out yet for Thursday’s exhibition opener. G Carl Nicks (toe) participated in part of an 11-on-11 live period as the Bucs ease him in.
