QBs coach McNulty on Freeman benching: "It was time'
Bucs quarterbacks coach John McNulty said the decision to pull the plug on Josh Freeman came down to a lack of execution.
Freeman completed 45.7 percent of his passes while compiling an 0-3 recored as a starter. He was benched in Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals in favor of rookie Mike Glennon.
What went wrong?
"A lot of it I think you look at the numbers from the first three games and a lot of it we didn’t execute or convert or however you want to say it,'' McNulty said. "He’s 45 percent and you can come back and say well here’s four drops. But in the end, I think you just evaluate the whole thing together, production, and over time, where are we headed? And it’s certainly not an easy decision.
""You know what the effect is on the community, the guy himself, the people in the locker room – it’s not something that’s taken lightly. But at some point, you have to call it. It was time. And Mike’s progress had something to do with it.''
