Quarterbacks are free-agent target of the Bucs, too
Josh Freeman is the Bucs’ starting quarterback, but the quarterback(s) that join him on the roster appears subject to change.
While the Bucs are plotting potential big moves on defense, including at cornerback and safety, they also are monitoring the backup quarterback market.
We've learned the team has reached out to a number of free-agent quarterbacks, including Chase Daniel (Saints) and Drew Stanton (Colts).
The quarterback market this year is thin, to say the least. But because the Bucs aren’t necessarily looking for a starter, they might be able to find a player they believe is an upgrade from their current backup, Dan Orlovsky. The Bucs’ opinion of Orlovsky isn’t clear and it’s hard to determine the fit because he appeared in only one game last season.
Other quarterbacks expected to be available include Brady Quinn (Chiefs) and Matt Cassell (Chiefs). Word among player agents has Quinn possibly headed to the Jets and Cassell a potential signing for the Vikings.
Transactions can begin when the signing period opens today at 4 p.m.
