Seferian-Jenkins confronted by Smith about Instagram picture
Captain Morgan was forced to walk the plank by Bucs coach Lovie Smith Monday.
Not happy with Austin Seferian-Jenkins' Instagram post that included a pictuure of his penalized touchdown celebration, Smith confronted the Bucs' rookie tight end and had the entry taken down.
It was the second 'teaching moment,' between Smith and Seferian Jenkins within 24 hours. On Sunday, after scoring on a 1-yard touchdown reception to give the Bucs a 17-16 lead early in the fourth quarter, Seferian-Jenkins drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for standing on the football and posing like the Morgan Rum captain.
As a result, the Falcons began their game-winning TD drive at their own 35-yard line and went onto a 27-17 victory.
“At the end of the day, it’s my Instagram. I posted a picture. I shouldn’t have posted it,'' Seferian-Jenkins said. "We’re in the middle of a 1-8 season and I can see why people are upset with it for a multitude of reasons and the last thing I want to do is put myself in front of the team in any way. I want to let my play do the talking, not anything after we score. Because at the end of the day, we got seven points but it gave them 15 yards which led to a game-winning score. You can’t have it. You need to be more mature, but when you’re in the heat of the game, you’re just having fun, you’re enjoying it, you work so hard and you’re just having fun. That’s what it was.
“Looking back on it, as soon as I got to the sidelines, I knew I shouldn’t have done that. It was a lapse in judgment. And that’s not what I want to be known for and not what I want to be answering on a Monday and I do not want my coach answering questions about what I did after a touchdown celebration on a Monday, nor do you guys really want to report on something on a Monday about something I did after a touchdown.''
Aside from the TD, it was a tough day for Seferian-Jenkins, who dropped a pass and had holding and false start penalties.
“It is a teaching moment, though, for a rookie,'' Smith said of the penalty on Seferian-Jenkins . "You hate...you know with rookies you want to have those teaching moments before something happens out there. We go over the rules, of course, you can’t use a prop after a touchdown. But when you do it in that situation, it’s just not good. I’d also tell you he’d like to have a lot – not a lot – but a couple plays (back). He jumped off-side one time. He’d like to have a couple things back but the guy really plays hard and we’ll clean those things up.''
Apparently, Smith also was unhappy when Seferian-Jenkins posted a photo of his illegal celebration, saying "Everybody has a little captain in them. #Itsabucslife.'
What was Smith's reaction to the Instagram post?
“When guys make mistakes, I confront them immediately, which happened this time,'' Smith said. "How’s that?
“The penalty of course, right away. And when I found out about the Instagram…I’m on Facebook a little bit so I can get pictures of my grandchild. Besides that, I’m not really into the rest of the stuff. Once it came to my attention, then I confronted him.''
