Smith 'excited' to use Darrelle Revis
While there were some questions - ill-advised or not - whether Bucs star cornerback Darrelle Revis would fit into Lovie Smith's Tampa 2 scheme, the new Bucs coach went out of his way in today's introductory press conference to say they have plenty of room for the five-time Pro Bowler.
"There's a reason why we have Tampa 2 associated to one of our coverages," Smith said. "But just want you to know - especially Darrelle Revis - we don't play Cover 2 every snap all right. We have a place for a great cover corner that's physical and can do all things."
Revis thrives on playing man-to-man coverage, locking down the opponent's top receivers. But Revis was asked to play his share of zone under coach Greg Schiano this past season, and will likely see zone when the Bucs go to a Tampa 2.
Smith can't wait to get Revis, who is heading to the Pro Bowl, back on the field.
"There's a reason why Darrelle Revis is one of the best football players in this game," Smith said. " And I'm excited - we're excited about getting our hands on him and putting him in position to make plays."
