Winston leads Bucs to 10-6 comback win over Cowboys

15

November

Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston lost the football and thought he lost the game. But he got another chance and made sure he got into the end zone.

Winston fumbled the football as he was leaping across the goal line and the Cowboys recovered in the end zone with the Bucs trailing 6-3 and under a minute to play.

But the Cowboys safety Jeff Heath, who had intercepted Winston twice in the game, was called for holding receiver Russell Shepard on the play and the penalty gave the Bucs a first down at the 1 yard line.

On the next play, Winston faked a handoff to Doug Martin and ran a bootleg to the right, going untouched for a touchdown with 54 seconds left to give the Bucs a 10-6 win over the Cowboys.

Safety Bradley McDougald, playing on his 25th birthday, intercepted a pass in the end zone from Cowboys quarterback Matt Cassel intended for Dez Bryant to end the game.

"Great play by Jameis trying to get it in the end zone,'' said Bucs coach Lovie Smith. "I'm just glad we got another opportunity.

"Of course I thought it was a good call.''

Winston had gone four games without a turnover. But that streak ended Sunday, and with it, so did nearly the Bucs chances of beating the Cowboys.

Winston threw two interceptions, both deflecting off his receiver’s hands.

Cowboys safety Jeff Heath intercepted both passes, the last one at the Dallas 9 yard line with 5:48 left in the game.

The pass was intended for Adam Humphries, who could only get one hand on the football.

The interceptions enabled the Cowboys hold on to a 6-3 lead and appeared close to snapping their six-game losing streak.

Having dropped every game since the injury to Tony Romo, who is scheduled to return to the lineup next Sunday, the Cowboys didn’t muster much offense, either Sunday.

Place-kicker Dan Bailey made field goals of 42 and 53 yards.

In between, Bucs kicker Connor Barth connected from 52 yards.

Both kickers also missed into a swirling wind.
Playing without Vincent Jackson and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Winston was locked onto receiver Mike Evans on Sunday and he had a huge day, with eight catches for 126 yards.
