Foot injury has Griffin out "a while"

Sophomore Jake Griffin, the starting left guard in USF's 3-0 start, is out "a while" after injuring his left foot in USF's 24-17 win against Central Florida, coach Jim Leavitt said Monday.

Griffin was on crutches at Monday's practice, his left foot in a boot, and while Leavitt said he did not know how many games Griffin will miss, he won't play in Saturday's game at Kansas.

The Bulls put sophomore Ryan Schmidt in at guard after Griffin's injury Saturday, but the most likely option is for Matt Huners, who started at left tackle, to slide over to left guard, with senior Thed Watson, out the last two games with an ankle injury of his own, to step in at left tackle.

Leavitt said he was surprised Watson didn't play Saturday, but said the decision was made in pregame drills as Watson didn't look close enough to 100 percent to risk playing. The Bulls, who had given up zero sacks in their first two games, gave up five against UCF.

Leavitt said linebacker Patrick St. Louis, who injured his elbow in Saturday's win, will play Saturday.
