Alvarado gets Big East special-teams nod
Sophomore punter Delbert Alvarado, who connected on two field goals and averaged 43.8 yards per game in Saturday's 64-12 win against Central Florida, has been named Big East special teams player of the week.
Alvarado, who hit field goals of 34 and 33 yards, was one of three Bulls players honored by the league. Quarterback Matt Grothe, who rushed for 100 yards and accounted for four touchdowns, was not the league's offensive player of the week but made the conference's honor roll. Same for defensive end George Selvie, who had four tackles for loss and a forced fumble in leading USF's defensive effort.
Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm got offensive honors after leading the Cardinals' upset of previously unbeaten Cincinnati with 350 passing yards and three touchdowns, and Rutgers safety Joe Lefeged was honored for his six tackles, including two sacks and a forced fumble, in the Knights' 38-14 win against Syracuse.
USF is holding its weekly media luncheon a day early this week, so I'll have notes from that later this afternoon ...
