Leavitt: Why no flag for Miami shh?
Anybody watch the Miami-Florida State game on Saturday night? Did that "shh" gesture made by Miami linebacker Colin McCarthy, a Clearwater Central Catholic graduate, after he returned Xavier Lee's fumble for a touchdown look familiar?
It did to Bulls coach Jim Leavitt, but not to the officials, because unlike Thursday night's USF game at Rutgers, it drew no flag.
"The inconsistency is what is frustrating," he said Sunday. "He did the exact same thing. He put his finger to his mouth, and there was no penalty."
When USF receiver Jessie Hester drew a flag for shushing Rutgers fans after a touchdown, USF's coaches recognized their player's mistake immediately. ESPN cameras showed Hester on the sideline after his touchdown catch raising his hands, unsure what he'd done wrong, only to get a stern finger to the lips from receivers coach Mike Canales.
"Jessie doesn't need to be doing that. He knows that," Leavitt said. "But that was a huge call in terms of field position."
Rutgers got the ball at its 42 after USF was assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and kicked off from its 15.
