Jenkins named as Thorpe semifinalist
USF senior cornerback Mike Jenkins, who returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in Saturday's loss to Cincinnati, has been named as one of 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's top defensive back.
Jenkins, projected by many analysts as a potential first-round draft pick in April, is the only Big East player among the 12 semifinalists. Those 12 will be pared to three finalists on Nov. 19, giving Jenkins two more games to impress balloters before the next cut.
USF's defense is well-represented among college football's national honors. Linebacker Ben Moffitt is one of 10 semifinalists for the Butkus Award, which will name three finalists on Thursday. Defensive end George Selvie, leading the nation in sacks and tackles for loss, is one of 12 semifinalists for the Lombardi Award, which will announce four finalists this week. (I'm a Lombardi balloter and voted for Selvie, LSU's Glenn Dorsey, Virginia's Chris Long and Michigan's Jake Long).
