Welcome back: Simpson, McCullough return
This morning is USF's annual pro day workout for NFL scouts, and I have two late additions to the lineup of athletes running and working out: former Bulls Chad Simpson and Ronnie McCullough, who went on to make names for themselves in Division I-AA after transferring from USF two years ago.
Simpson, who returned a kickoff for a touchdown in USF's huge win against Louisville in 2005, has been a standout running back at Morgan State, good enough to be invited to the NFL combine workouts. McCullough was a prolific tackler at Bethune-Cookman the last two seasons, ranking among the nation's leading tacklers this past fall on a defense loaded with former Bulls. Not surprising that USF would allow them to piggyback on the interest in USF's potential draft picks ...
It looks like this morning's early rain will clear out by the time the Bulls run their 40-yard dashes at 11:30 a.m., and scouts will certainly take a wet field into context when remember their times. I'm just as curious to see the weight-room numbers -- how many reps can defensive tackle Richard Clebert pile up in bench-pressing 225 pounds? He holds the USF record at 43 but wants to improve on that; for comparison's sake, the highest mark during this spring's testing was 29 reps. (We'll have more on that later today if all goes well.)
Word from USF's strength and conditioning department is that every NFL team will have representation on hand today, including three head coaches. (No word on who, but if Jon Gruden has time to caddy John Daly, he might have time to drop over for a look ...)
