Softball reaches Big East final vs. DePaul

Top-seeded USF got a two-run home run from Britta Giddens in the sixth inning and held off host Louisville for a 2-1 victory in Friday's Big East tournament semifinal, advancing to face second-seeded DePaul in Saturday's championship game at 5 p.m.

The Bulls, outhit 9-4 by the Cardinals, got three scoreless innings from starter Courtney Mosch, and freshman Capri Catalano improved to 17-1 this season, getting the win in relief after allowing one run in four innings.

"All year long, we preached about being close in ballgames near the end of the year," coach Ken Eriksen said in a statement. "Our pitching staff did a fabulous job of holding a very potent Louisville offense to one run."

USF split two regular-season meetings with DePaul, which has the Big East's Pitcher of the Year in sophomore Becca Heteniak, 30-6 with a 1.21 ERA.
