USF alum Cherry just misses Olympic medal
Former USF standout Damu Cherry, running Tuesday in the 100-meter hurdles finals in Beijing, missed a medal by one hundredth of a second, taking fourth with a time of 12.65 seconds in a ridiculously close finish.
That 0.01 second is all the separated second place from fifth, with American hurdler Dawn Harper earning gold at 12.54, then Australia's Sally McLellan and Canada's Priscilla Lopes-Schliep tying for second at 12.64 seconds. Cherry and Jamaica's Delloreen Ennis-London both just missed the podium at 12.65, and incredibly, sixth place went to Jamaica's Bridgitte Foster-Hylton at 12.66. American Lolo Jones stumbled on a hurdle to lose what appeared to be a likely victory.
The 100-meter hurdles finals will be aired as part of NBC's Olympics coverage Tuesday night between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., and the close margin of victory is sure to a topic of conversation in what has been a week full of photo finishes. Here's the story from NBCOlympics.com.
