Leavitt not expecting Pupello for UCF game

USF coach Jim Leavitt said he isn't planning on having his No. 2 tight end, sophomore Trent Pupello, healthy enough to play in Saturday's game at Central Florida.

Pupello, who played extensively in the first half of Saturday's win against Tennessee-Martin, injured his right ankle on the second-half kickoff. He watched Monday's practice on crutches with a boot on his foot. Running back Mike Ford, who had a team-high 15 carries Saturday but did not return after injuring his left ankle, had a boot on his injured foot Monday and walked through drills with a slight limp.

"I don't know if (Pupello) will be available this week or not," Leavitt said. "We have to plan on not having him, and if he comes out and plays, great. ... (Ford's) ankle is sore. I dont' know about him either, so we'll see."

Leavitt said he didn't expect Ford back to practice any earlier than Wednesday, and he'd know his status for Saturday at that point. Those of you easily annoyed by wild hyperbole might want to skip the next paragraph.

"If they're not 100 percent, they won't play, because there's no way you're going to have a chance against Central Florida with a guy in there not going 100 miles an hour," he said. "It can't happen. We would wait."
