USF-Kansas: Best QB matchup of week
Sure USF-Kansas is a huge game. But bigger than USC-Ohio State? That's what the folks at the Davey O'Brien Quarterback Award believe, as they've designated Friday's Bulls-Jayhawks showdown as their "Marquee Matchup" for this weekend.
Junior quarterbacks Matt Grothe and Todd Reesing are both O'Brien candidates, and the award's weekly e-mail to media members spotlights their head-to-head meeting, instead of USC's Mark Sanchez vs. Ohio State's Todd Boeckman, or even Oklahoma's Sam Bradford vs. Washington's Jake Locker.
It's a curious choice, just because neither Grothe nor Reesing has a single top-five Heisman vote from any of the 15 balloters in ESPN.com's weekly voting. Bradford is fourth in the current balloting there, with Sanchez fifth. I'd think if either Grothe or Reesing can dominate Friday's game -- a 300-yard, three-touchdown game before a national TV audience -- they'd start moving into the discussion as a national top-10 Heisman candidate. The losing quarterback is probably out of the Heisman picture this season, barring an undefeated run through the rest of the season with gaudy stats to match.
-- Programming note: Catch 47, or as it will be known starting Wednesday, Bright House Sports Network, will air replays of all USF football games this season, on Sundays at 7 p.m. and Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m.
