Freshman quarterback B.J. Daniels has traded his No. 7 jersey for a No. 5 this week. His challenge? Simulating West Virginia's Pat White on USF's scout team to help prepare the Bulls defense for Saturday's regular-season finale in Morgantown.

"You can't simulate White," said USF coach Jim Leavitt, whose team nonetheless has beaten the Mountaineers two years in a row.

Daniels hasn't played a scout-team role all season -- another true freshman, Evan Landi, has typically simulated the opposing quarterback. Daniels can give USF at least a reminder of some of the speed they'll face Saturday -- White has more career rushing yards than any quarterback in NCAA history.

"(Daniels) has the type of wheels you need to simulate Pat White running the football," offensive coordinator Greg Gregory said.

Containing White is the focus of USF's defense -- three years ago, he broke loose on touchdown runs of 65 and 76 yards in the second half of a 28-13 win. In two games since, he's been limited to 53 rushing yards, though he was knocked out of last year's game late in the first half.

The Bulls have had the advantage of an extra week to prepare for West Virginia, and Gregory said the offense has used the extra practices to prepare for the Mountaineers' unconventional defense, which has three down linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs.

"This is a completely different style of defense," Gregory said. "Everyone else we play is pretty much the same scheme with some variations."
