Lots of news from Tuesday's weekly press luncheon, as USF quarterback Matt Grothe said he will be back for his senior year next fall and won't submit his name to the NFL's advisory board for underclassmen.

There's more quarterback news, as freshman B.J. Daniels, who is playing the role of West Virginia quarterback Pat White on the scout team this week, will officially join Stan Heath's basketball team on Friday. He'll travel with the Bulls to Central Florida on Saturday but won't dress until the Dec. 14 game against Niagara at the earliest. His first practice will be Monday morning.

Daniels did not dress for USF's last football game against Connecticut. The Bulls intend to apply for a medical redshirt for Daniels, who has not played since September because of an injury to his left (non-throwing) wrist.

He was a two-sport standout at Tallahassee Lincoln High and chose USF in part because it gave him the chance to play both sports on the college level. He averaged 27 points per game as a senior in basketball and will join a deep Bulls backcourt after his final football practice Thursday afternoon. It appears that football coach Jim Leavitt won't require Daniels to practice with the football team in preparation for a bowl game.

USF will file paperwork for junior defensive end George Selvie to the NFL's advisory board for underclassmen to get a better sense for where he might be drafted if he left after this season, but the Bulls do not plan to file such a request for any other underclassmen. Grothe said he had considered putting his name in to see where he might be drafted, and safety Nate Allen had been discussed as a potential early-entry candidate before this season.

Had he submitted his name to the advisory board, it's unlikely that Grothe would have been told he would be picked high
enough to skip his senior season. One draft site, nfldraftscout.com, has him ranked as the
No. 20 quarterback in the country, but there hasn't been more than 17
quarterbacks selected in any of the last 10 drafts.

"I knew I wanted to come back, I just wanted to (submit his name to the advisory board)," Grothe said. "I'll finish the rest of this year out, then get ready to go into spring next year and hopefully can do a little better. ... I just figured I would (submit his name), and I don't care if I do or don't. ... I'm coming back for next year. I'll come back and play well next year and go out with a bang my senior year."
