It remains to be seen whether guard Mike Mercer will remain part of USF's basketball program, but he and teammate Anthony Crater had plenty of time to think about the decisions that led to their arrest late Friday night on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana.

The two players remained in jail until Sunday afternoon, spending two nights and a full day in jail before a judge agreed Sunday morning to release them on their own recognizance. Crater was released at noon Sunday, with Mercer released 13 minutes later.

They'd each been held on $500 bond. When Mercer was arrested in September on a misdemeanor charge of public consumption of alcohol, he was in jail less than seven hours, released on $250 cash bond posted by teammate Jesus Verdejo. No such help came after this second arrest.

This is Crater's first offense at USF, so while coach Stan Heath said he'll be disciplined, he's unlikely to lose his spot on the team. Heath said Saturday that he will likely have a decision on Mercer's future by Monday after speaking with the junior guard and USF athletic director Doug Woolard -- one viable option that wouldn't end his Bulls career would be to take away Mercer's scholarship but allowing him to remain on the team as a walk-on.
