In the next week or so, USF fans should know the answer to perhaps the most significant question of the Bulls' offseason: Will defensive end George Selvie return for his senior year at USF?

Mock drafts in the mainstream media have regularly had Selvie projected as a late first-round draft pick, but this week brings a new perspective: advice to stay in school. This week's issue of The Sporting News looks at four college football players who "don't have clear-cut choices" about leaving early, and Selvie is one of the four.

NFL scout Russ Lande recommends that two of the four enter this year's draft, but for Selvie, he writes: "There is little doubt Selvie has the athleticism and explosiveness that make NFL teams drool, but he is far from the player he will eventually be. He has to become more consistent rushing the passer and must improve against the run." Lande then suggests that Selvie "stay in school."

Another factor working in USF's favor is last week's news from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell that no significant changes will be made to the league's rookie salary structure until the 2011 draft at the earliest. Agents have been using the threat of a limited wage scale for rookies to try to push underclassmen into entering this year's draft.

While we're on the topic of underclassmen and the draft, USF gets a boost from Saturday's news that Connecticut running back Donald Brown, the nation's leading rusher, is headed for the draft. The Huskies' win against Buffalo means the Big East finishes with a 4-2 bowl record, though the conference did lose in its only two bowls against ranked opponents.
