Former Rutgers coach interviews with Leavitt
Add another name to the list of potential additions to USF's defensive staff: former Rutgers defensive backs coach Chris Demarest, who was out of football last season, met with Bulls coach Jim Leavitt in New Jersey on Friday about becoming USF's secondary coach.
Demarest, who led Rutgers' recruiting efforts in the Miami area, met with Leavitt before a scheduled speaking engagement at a coaching clinic in Cherry Hill, N.J. The 44-year-old was Greg Schiano's assistant head coach during the 2007 season, but resigned in February 2008. He had been charged with domestic assault the previous July, though charges were subsequently dropped after completion of an anger management class. Here's the story about his departure from the Newark Star-Ledger.
"Chris is a very good football coach," Schiano said in announcing his resignation last year. "He's going to end up coaching real soon, I'm sure."
Demarest, who worked on FSU's staff as a graduate assistant in 1998-99, is the third known candidate to interview for USF's defensive openings, following former Cincinnati defensive coordinator Joe Tresey and current Nebraska linebackers coach Mike Ekeler. Tresey and Ekeler interviewed as potential defensive coordinators for the Bulls.
Demarest could not be reached for comment Monday afternoon.
