Surprise: Gibbs' Kevin Williams signs with USF

Just when you thought there were no more surprises, USF added one more member to its incoming recruiting class, as former Gibbs standout Kevin Williams, most recently at Los Medanos College in California, has signed with the Bulls.

Williams, who nearly signed with USF in spring 2007, will get a long look on returns and should also compete as a defensive back. He chose the Bulls over offers from Memphis, Idaho and Hawaii.

"It just happened today, but USF has been talking to me the whole time," Williams said. "They've been messing with me since my sophomore year of high school, in 2003. I'm really going to help on special teams, and I hope at DB, too. It feels great to come home. I'm tired of being on the West coast, three hours behind Florida."

Williams graduated from Gibbs in 2006, and after not qualifying to join USF in 2007, he spent time at City College of San Francisco before his current school, Los Medanos, where he'll finish classes in May.

He's been close friends with USF safety Jerrell Young since they were 4 years old -- close enough that he has Young's name tattooed on his arm.

Lots more to come from USF coach Jim Leavitt about the incoming class ...

-- It looks like junior college linebacker Jacquian Williams will still sign and be part of USF's incoming class. His signing is being held up on the Fort Scott end -- some complicated issues with the head coach there trying to sway him to Nebraska apparently. We'll try to get an update there later tonight ...

-- Leavitt confirmed that freshman linebacker Quavon Taylor will not return to the Bulls this fall and is transferring. Taylor was suspended from the team early last season and is taking classes at USF this spring but will not return to the team. A handful of walk-ons also won't be back -- lineman Jason Fox has graduated and won't use his final year of eligibility, and special-teams standout Lucas Darr will not be able to recover fully from an ankle injury and can no longer play. Walk-on receiver Rhett Hamrick, who did not catch a pass in two seasons on the roster, is transferring to a smaller school, and walk-on Mistral Raymond is also no longer with the Bulls.
