Marve update: Michigan out, Arizona State in
With former Plant and Miami quarterback Robert Marve making visits to USF's spring practice in the last two weeks, the Bulls remain in contention for the coveted transfer, who will start a busy schedule of official visits at Purdue this coming weekend.
Plant coach Robert Weiner gave an update on Marve's list of potential schools Monday, with one notable change: Michigan is no longer in consideration, with Arizona State stepping in as one of five schools to which he's planning official campus visits in the next month or so. His itinerary for the next four weekends is Purdue, Nebraska, Texas Tech and Arizona State, with UCLA possibly getting his final official visit after spring practice. Weiner said Marve has been to USF enough that he doesn't feel a need to take an official campus visit to the Bulls.
Weiner said that Michigan was dropped because of the Wolverines' QB situation, which got more congested when Michigan picked up a commitment for another passer due to arrive in 2010.
With the rest of his six suitors far away from Tampa geographically, one advantage USF might have would be the potential for an NCAA hardship waiver, which if successful would allow Marve to play this fall without sitting out the season as normally required for Division I-A transfers. USF has had success in the past in getting such waivers for players who have family medical issues -- as Marve's father Eugene does -- and Weiner said USF "would be the only place he could do that." The fact that Marve has scheduled five official visits, all to schools farther away from home than Miami, suggests a desire to be closer to his family isn't his primary motivation in transferring.
Weiner also said that USF remains the only scholarship offer for current junior Eric Dungy, whose father, Tony, spoke at USF's annual coaching clinic on Friday night. Weiner said USF is likely targeting the 6-foot-2, 185-pound Dungy at safety and not at receiver; UCF has also shown considerable interest but hasn't formally offered. Weiner said he expects more schools to pursue Dungy after spring practice next month.
Two more rising seniors from Plant -- offensive linemen Andre Mondor (6-5, 320 pounds) and Jon Vega (6-5, 295) visited a USF practice this week. Both are "wide-open," Weiner said, and he expects cornerback Javonte Martin to attend USF's spring game on Saturday. Weiner said he won't be at USF's spring game, but will instead be at Georgia's, where former Plant star Aaron Murray will be playing.
