Free agents: Taurus to K.C., Schmidt to Titans
USF seniors Taurus Johnson and Ryan Schmidt, passed over in this weekend's NFL Draft, have signed free-agent contracts with the Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans, respectively.
Johnson, who caught a team-best 10 touchdown receptions over the past two seasons, attended the NFL combine but wasn't among 35 receivers drafted. Even as an undrafted rookie, he'll have a solid chance with the Chiefs, who used a sixth-round pick on McNeese State receiver Quinten Lawrence.
Schmidt, who started 33 games in the past three seasons, lined up at left tackle and left guard as a senior, will likely work at guard or center with the Titans, he said. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound senior from Boca Raton also considered offers from the Browns and Jaguars before choosing the Titans.
"It was kind of a surprise, but the deal was done within five minutes," said Schmidt, who will report for a rookie minicamp on Thursday.
Johnson and Schmidt give the Bulls three rookies in NFL camps this spring, following linebacker Tyrone McKenzie, who was drafted by the Patriots in the third round Sunday
