WNIT title: Where does it rank for USF?
Outside of the context of USF basketball history, it's easy to dismiss the Bulls' women's basketball team's WNIT championship as simply that -- an amazing run through a consolation tournament -- but in a historical sense, where does this run rank in the postseason history of USF basketball, and even USF athletics?
Remember that USF's men's program has just four postseason wins in its history -- all in the NIT, none in the past 14 years -- and that the Bulls had never strung together more than two wins in any postseason basketball appearance until Jose Fernandez's team just won five in a row. The one time USF's women made the NCAA tournament -- in 2006 -- and the two times the men did, in 1990 and 1992, they lost in the opening round, so the closest competition for an actual basketball title would be the men winning a Sun Belt tournament crown in 1990.
Outside of basketball, what are the biggest postseason accomplishments -- women's tennis and men's soccer winning Big East championships, or George Kiefer's team reaching the Elite Eight last season? Football has won two bowl games, yes, but how does a single win compare to the five USF's women strung together? The Bulls have won national titles in lesser-known sports such as sailing and individual titles in rifle and swimming -- what else do you put in the conversation?
