USF, Louisville move to doubleheader today
Forget about waiting until Saturday -- by tonight, USF baseball will know if it's won the Big East regular-season championship or lost it in the final hours of the season.
The Bulls (32-21, 18-7) and Cardinals (38-14, 17-7), originally scheduled to play tonight and Saturday afternoon, will now play their remaining two games in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. today. USF has a half-game lead on Louisville and needs just one win to clinch the regular-season title.
Because West Virginia lost to Pittsburgh on Thursday, the Bulls won't have to share the Big East crown and can clinch it outright with one win today. And with St. John's losing to Notre Dame, the Bulls now cannot be seeded lower than second in next week's Big East tournament.
-- In light of Steve Spurrier poking at his alma mater with talk of Urban Meyer/Notre Dame rumors, the Orlando Sentinel offers its list of the top 10 "pot-stirring head coaches" in college football. Yes, USF's Jim Leavitt makes the list, and the surprise might be that Orlando only had him at No. 10: "Sure, this Big East blowhard can't win the big one, but nobody says "nah-nah-nah-boo-boo" to UCF better that Jim Leavitt," they write.
-- ESPN.com had a good chat with Big East blogger Brian Bennett, with a handful of USF questions. The big question mark will continue to be the offensive line, which much replace four senior starters ...
-- USF-bound soccer standout Hasani Sinclair has been named Florida Gatorade Player of the Year after scoring 47 goals and 14 assists in leading American Heritage-Delray High to a state championship, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Read this story in the Palm Beach Post and you'll see that his brother Sekani, a sophomore, had 41 goals for the same team.
-- Golfweek.com has an interesting column on the decline of women's college golf in Florida -- no state teams made the NCAAs for the second time in three years. Writer Beth Ann Baldry gets in a shot at USF, running through the things that might draw a golfer to a college. She includes "high-profile football/basketball teams," then writes "though USF, not so much really."
