Top-level college baseball is making a return to Pinellas County.

If you remember the Big East/Big Ten Baseball Challenge that opened the 2009 season, then you might like the newly christened Big Ten/Big East Baseball Challenge, which returns to St. Petersburg and Clearwater in February.

The Big Ten went 15-9 against the Big East this past spring, and the event is expanding to 10 teams from each league. I'm impressed that the event goes so far as to alternate first billing in its title, though I wonder if the official site will temporarily redirect from bigeastbigtenbaseball.com to bigtenbigeastbaseball.com. (The logo, as you see, still has last year's pecking order, as does my headline.)

Last year's event drew an announced 17,000 fans over three days -- we'll post an update as soon as we hear which Big Ten teams USF will play in its three games. Games will be played at Clearwater's Jack Russell Stadium and at Al Lang Stadium and the Raymond A. Naimoli Complex in St. Petersburg. And will the Big East postseason tournament be back in Clearwater? That venue remains TBD on the Big East's website ...

-- USF guard Dominique Jones reports Tuesday to Colorado Springs for tryout camp for the U.S. team in the World University Games, and his chances of making the 12-man roster just got a little tougher. Arizona guard Nic Wise and Illinois center Mike Tisdale were just added to the tryout roster, making it 17 players for 12 spots.

-- Incoming USF soccer player Hasani Sinclair has been named to the prestigious Parade All-America team. I'd offer up a link, but Parade hasn't updated his website, so I have to go old school and direct you to Sunday's newspaper, which had a listing of the full men's and women's team. (By the way, the ever-pompous Marilyn vos Savant warns readers that taking a warm or hot shower when it's hot out is, in fact, dangerous!)
