Incoming USF football class arrives Wednesday
USF football's incoming recruiting class arrives on campus
Wednesday with the second summer semester of classes starting next
week, but at least two incoming freshmen say they remain in academic limbo and
have not been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Center Kamran Joyer of Wesley Chapel said Monday night that he
hasn't been cleared by the NCAA and probably will not be at USF for
summer classes, though he could get news Tuesday. Safety Ivan Nicholas
of Jacksonville, the younger brother of former Bulls linebacker Stephen
Nicholas, said Monday he is still awaiting test scores from a recent entrance exam and
hopes those scores will allow him to meet the NCAA's requirements for
initial eligibility. Once both are cleared by the NCAA, they still
would have to be approved by an academic committee at USF that evaluates
incoming student-athletes.
Four other players who signed with USF in February aren't expected
to be with the Bulls this fall -- defensive tackle Khyri Thornton said
he wasn't accepted into USF by the academic committee; he has since
been released from his scholarship and has signed with Southern Miss.Running back Adaris Bellamy of Dunedin is bound for prep school in Virginia, tight end Gerard Atkins of Dixie Hollins is expected to grayshirt or defer enrollment until January, and junior college defensive back Kevin Williams said he did not have enough credit hours to be admitted for fall classes.
USF signed 29 players in February knowing only 25 could join the
Bulls this fall, so much of the attrition to this year's class was
anticipated by USF's coaching staff on signing day.
