Good news for USF baseball coach Lelo Prado, as Jefferson's Chad Taylor and Alonso's Ray Delphey, both taken in the baseball draft, have decided to attend USF rather than start their pro careers.

Taylor, drafted by the Cubs in the 13th round, told the Times' Ed Encina he'll be honoring his commitment to USF, and Delphey, picked by the Padres in the 42nd round, said he plans to enroll in summer classes, which start a week from Monday.

"Ever since my injury, I was pretty sure I was going to USF, but now I know," said Delphey, a right-handed pitcher who is recovering well from ACL surgery he underwent two months ago. He's on schedule to be released to compete again in October, in time for fall baseball practice with the Bulls.

Said Taylor: "It had to pay me enough to get me out of college. I
know I'm going to USF. I think it's in my best interest to go to
college. I'm really excited. I can't wait to start school and play at
USF."

Taylor hit .342 at Jefferson as a senior with six home runs and 24 RBIs. He played shortstop in high school but could make his first impact at USF as an outfielder.

USF lost another signee this week when outfielder Chase Greene of Boca Raton, a 16th-round pick, said he would be signing with the Mets. Still on word on the first USF signee to be drafted, as Jesuit shortstop Nick Lockwood is meeting with Twins officials this week.
