USF's Lockwood, signee Delphey drafted

Two more players with USF ties were taken on the final day of this year's baseball draft, with sophomore outfielder Ryan Lockwood going in the 39th round to the Oakland A's and signee Ray Delphey, a right-handed pitcher from Alonso High, selected in the 42nd round by the San Diego Padres.

That makes three Bulls taken in the draft, and four of the six high school players who signed with USF for the upcoming season. Two of those players could certainly have an impact on each other's decision -- Lockwood's brother, Nick, a Jesuit graduate, was picked in the ninth round Wednesday by the Twins. They have a strong interest in playing together next season, so if one were to opt for a pro contract, it could make the other more likely to follow suit.

To recap up the other draft picks: junior right-hander Shawn Sanford in the 13th to the Giants, signee Chad Taylor in the 13th to the Cubs, signee Chase Greene in the 16th to the Mets and senior catcher Trey Manz to the Reds in the 26th. We're working on interviews with the kids we haven't already talked to ...

And for what it's worth, the Yankees make an interesting pick at the buzzer, using their 48th round pick on West Virginia quarterback Pat White, who was a standout baseball player in high school and drafted in the fourth round in 2004 by the Angels. White was also drafted by the Miami Dolphins, and it's doubtful the Yankees could lure him away from the seven-figure guaranteed money and immediate playing time that come with the NFL contract.
