Notes: Big weekend with Sling & Shoot camp

I'm finishing up my final day covering the NBA Summer League in Orlando for NBA.com, but there's still enough USF stuff happening to keep the blog busy during my downtime here.

-- Talked on Thursday to the 76ers' Samuel Dalembert, whose sister Melissa will be a senior center on USF's women's basketball team next season. Sam has seen his sister play in a game at Villanova, and I asked him if his schedule would allow him to get to Tampa -- he said the issue isn't the busy rigors of NBA play, but ... bugs. "When I'm down in Florida, I stay over here, where there's less mosquitos," he said.

-- More than 60 high school teams will be on USF's campus this weekend for the ever-expanding Sling & Shoot camp, which brings together a ton of recruits to get a close look at the Bulls' coaches and facilities. There's high praise for the Sling & Shoot from recruiting guru Larry Blustein in the Miami Herald. One addition to the weekend in the past year is a Lineman Challenge that will bring the big guys on campus in addition to the quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs ...

-- ESPN.com blogger Brian Bennett has been doing a "Fresh Faces" feature on each Big East team, and today he gets to USF, writing about four newcomers: defensive ends Jason Pierre-Paul and Ryne Giddins, linebacker Sam Barrington and offensive linemen Jamar Bass. Hard to leave cornerback Kayvon Webster off the list, but Bennett is right that USF could have a handful of first-year players in key roles this fall. That upside, paired with USF's established stars in Matt Grothe and George Selvie, could be a winning combination if the newcomers don't act like newcomers by the time conference play starts in mid-October ...
