USF men's hoops needing one more game
USF released its nonconference basketball schedule for 2009-10 last week, but as it turns out, the Bulls won't be playing host to Florida Gulf Coast on Dec. 5 as announced.
USF coach Stan Heath said Wednesday that the two schools had discussed the game and a contract was mailed to FGCU to be signed. USF mistakenly believed the contract had been signed, but has since found out that FGCU is playing a different game instead of the Bulls.
"They never signed it, and they're going in another direction," said Heath, who is trying to find a suitable replacement to complete the 12-game nonconference schedule.
The mixup may cost USF a home game, though Heath said he continues to try to find another program interested in coming to the Sun Dome. If the Bulls play on the road, it could be a higher-profile opponent, as Heath has contacted schools like Northwestern and Siena, who still have openings.
FGCU went 11-20 in the Atlantic Sun last season, so the game was a likely win for USF, so Heath is challenged with finding another suitable game, but one he's confident his team has a chance to win.
