Offense shines in Bulls' second scrimmage

USF waited until after 9 p.m. to squeeze in its second scrimmage of the preseason, but coach Jim Leavitt was pleased by his offense on a night where veteran leaders Matt Grothe and George Selvie were held out.

"I wanted to scrimmage under the lights, and we got it in," Leavitt said. "Offensively, they did a great job. B.J. Daniels had a good night, and Evan Landi looked good. All the running backs looked good."

Receiver Dontavia Bogan broke a tackle for a touchdown reception from Daniels, and freshman Lindsey Lamar, continuing a strong start, scored a touchdown, as did junior Aston Samuels. Freshman safety Victor Marc, who had two interceptions in goal-line drills Tuesday, picked off another pass in the scrimmage.

-- Leavitt on freshman linebacker Sam Barrington, who has impressed even as he still works to learn USF's defensive schemes: "Barrington has to learn the defense, has to learn how to lineup. He's got a lot to learn, but he can play at a high level. Sam's frustrated because he made a lot of mental mistakes, probably did a lot of things that were not good within the scheme of our defense. But he can flat play."

-- Leavitt had praise for defensive tackles Cory Grissom and Leslie Stirrups, as well as corner Jerome Murphy. Jon Lejiste was out with a groin injury, and he's battling Tyson Butler for the nickel spot.

-- Defensive coordinator Joe Tresey, explaining some of the big plays given up Wednesday: "We gave up some big plays, which we didn't last week," he said. "Some of that's from a call standpoint. I made some calls just to get stuff on film. Not necessarily what I would call in that situation, but you're not sure how many plays you're going to get, and we don't scout our offense."

Who impressed him on offense: "The guy that sticks out to me offensively is B.J. Daniels. He's a concern. When he has the ball in his hands, he's a concern. He makes people miss, and he's a great complement to Matt Grothe."

-- Offensive coordinator Mike Canales: "There was a lot of positives. Lindsey Lamar had a nice night. Mike Ford ran hard. Mo Plancher did. Saw some really good things by a lot of kids."
