Tennis coach Barr in hospital with pneumonia
USF men's tennis coach Don Barr, the dean of the Bulls coaching family with 17 seasons as head coach, has been hospitalized since Monday with pneumonia but hopes to be released in the next day or two.
Barr, 66, who guided USF to a Big East championship on the Bulls' home courts in May, said Thursday night he is feeling better and looks forward to returning to his team. Assistant coaches Mike Henderson and Tamer El Sawy have watched over the team in practices this week. Barr said athletic director Doug Woolard called Thursday morning to see how he was doing.
The Bulls open their fall season Sept. 11 at the University of Virginia Invitational. Barr, who played one season of tennis at USF in 1967, has been a coach for the Bulls since 1991, moving to head coach in 1992. His teams won a Metro championship in 1995, four in Conference USA and their first in the Big East this spring.
