All charges dropped against former TE Pupello

Seven months after his arrest in Channelside on four felony counts, prosecutors have decided not to pursue any criminal charges against former Florida and USF tight end Trent Pupello.

Pupello, 22, was arrested in April on three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of discharging a weapon in public after an incident in which police alleged he pistol-whipped three people in a brawl outside a nightclub. On Wednesday, prosecutors filed paperwork to not file charges, writing that "after a thorough review of statements from numerous witnesses ... (we are) unable to refute the defendent's claim of justified use of force."

Pupello, a former Jefferson standout who was a redshirting freshman on Florida's 2006 national championship team, played one season at USF in 2008. He had left USF's football team after that season, taking a year off to recover from neck injuries suffered in a car accident last fall. He has not attended classes at USF since the spring semester, and did not return messages seeking comment, though there's no indication that he intends to return to college football.
