USF coach Fernandez back for game tonight

USF women's basketball coach Jose Fernandez, who was away from his team for a week and hospitalized for five days with severe abdominal pains, will be back at courtside for the Bulls' game Monday night against St. Peter's.

Fernandez, who missed USF's season opener Friday, an overtime loss to Florida A&M, said he was released Sunday and is feeling better. He was diagnosed last week with acute diverticulitis, a painful inflammation in the wall of the large intestine. Fernandez is still beating treated with antibiotics and was able to avoid abdominal surgery, which can often be required with diverticulitis.

Fernandez, who last year became USF's all-time winningest basketball coach for the men's or women's teams, said he watched plenty of game tape while in the hospital, including a DVD of Friday's loss, and is looking forward to seeing his players at tonight's game. The Bulls tip off at the Sun Dome at 5 p.m., with the men's game against Virginia following around 7:30 p.m.
