USF's Allen nominated for Wuerffel Trophy
USF senior safety Nate Allen is one of 74 nominees for the Wuerffel Trophy, presented to the Division I-A player who "best combines exemplary community service with academic and athletic achievement."
Named for former Florida quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, the award is in its fifth season. Florida quarterback Tim Tebow won the award last season.
Allen is one of eight Big East players nominated for the award, along with Cincinnati safety Aaron Webster, Connecticut receiver Brad Kanuch, Louisville fullback Joe Tronzo, Pittsburgh linebacker Adam Gunn, Rutgers cornerback Devin McCourty, Syracuse center Jim McKenzie and West Virginia linebacker Reed Williams.
Other state nominees include Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder, Florida kicker Jonathan Phillips, and Florida International quarterback Paul McCall.
