USF's Ford arrested for driving without license
Driving infractions have caught up with USF running back Mike Ford again, as the junior was arrested on campus early Thursday morning and booked on a misdemeanor charge of driving without a valid license.
According to USF police, Ford was stopped at 12:24 a.m. for riding a moped on the sidewalk on campus and did not have a driver's license with him. Ford had been cited by USF police in September for not having a license with him but was only given a citation; this time, he was arrested. The arrest report states that he was transported to jail "with no issues." He was released at 5:58 a.m. on $250 bond. USF is in the middle of final exams for the fall semester this week.
"I'm disappointed he was driving his moped without a license. He should know better," USF coach Jim Leavitt said Thursday afternoon.
Ford, who rushed for a season-high 74 yards and a touchdown Saturday in USF's loss at Connecticut, has gotten in similar trouble before. He turned himself in to Sarasota police in 2007 on an outstanding warrant issued after he missed a court date for driving without a valid license or registration.
According to his state driver report, since 2006, Ford has been cited four times for operating a motor vehicle without a license and twice for driving with a suspended license. His license has been suspended five times in the last three years for failure to pay traffic fines, and he has had duplicate or replacement licenses issued five times since 2007, according to the driver report.
Ford, 23, was suspended for the first two games of the season for an
unspecified violation of team rules. He has rushed for 243 yards and
five touchdowns, and with senior Mo Plancher having recent problems
with fumbles, he could have a larger role in USF's next game, against
Northern Illinois on Jan. 2 in the International Bowl in Toronto.
