Rumors afoot, but no Leavitt decision made yet
It has been relatively quiet on the Jim Leavitt future-in-limbo front, and despite a new batch of rumors floated Friday, my understanding is that the university review is not complete and no decision has been made with regard to Leavitt's future as USF's coach.
Two sites floated one-line references to Leavitt on Friday -- Yahoo.com's Tom Dienhart, who is well-connected but also deals a lot in speculation, posted on his Twitter.com page that "The hot rumor in coaching circles is South Florida may change coaches after its bowl." And the site footballcoachscoop.com posted a note that said "Sources are telling us that Head Coach Jim Leavitt could be on his way out after the Bowl Game."
Again, "could" and "may" are some of the weakest words in journalism. Leavitt could be elected prime minister of Canada after the bowl game, and may take up permanent residency here in Ontario, win or lose Saturday. USF officials have been steadfast in saying they will not comment until the university's review is complete, and they continued to decline to comment on the issue when asked Friday.
In watching players and coaches the last two days in preparation for Saturday's International Bowl in Toronto, it appears to be business as usual, with players joking with Leavitt and his assistants. Defensive tackle Aaron Harris actually tackled Leavitt during one practice this week, hoping to get out of some of the warmups the players do at the start of practice. The move worked, and players have been tackling coaches all week -- linebackers coach David Blackwell got the honors Thursday, and defensive line coach Kevin Patrick got a surprise dousing from a cooler of ice water to celebrate a field goal in practice.
To say that no decision has been made is still not to say that Leavitt isn't coaching his last game at USF on Saturday. That remains a possibility, though the longer the review takes, the less likely it seems that the Bulls would make a change -- if what Leavitt did was a fireable offense, it doesn't make sense that USF would allow him another opportunity to be in the same locker room with the same players.
Asked if there were any provisions put in place for the bowl, such as a USF administrator being in the locker room before, during and after the game, USF officials again declined to comment. So again, things could still go either way, but in talking with several people in and around the program today, everything I'm hearing says no decision has been made either way.
