Bulls' win streak ends at Notre Dame, 65-62
USF's four-game winning streak ended Sunday afternoon as Dominique Jones' 3-pointer missed at the buzzer and Notre Dame held on for a 65-62 win.
The Bulls (15-8, 5-6 in Big East) had a chance to tie the game with 8 seconds left, but center Jarrid Famous -- who had scored four points in the final minute -- missed a game-tying free throw. Notre Dame's Luke Harangody, who sealed the Irish's first win against USF with late free throws, hit two free throws to put his team up three with 4 seconds left.
Jones, who went 3-for-17 for just 10 points after averaging 35 points the previous four games, had a good shot to tie the game, but the shot bounced off the back of the rim. Chris Howard had a career-high 23 points for USF, and Famous had 18 points and eight rebounds. Harangody led Notre Dame (17-7, 6-5) with 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Tory Jackson had nine of his 18 points in the final six minutes.
USF, which hurt themselves at the free-throw line, hitting just 10 of 20 attempts, led by as many as six points in the second half, but couldn't extend their streak. The Bulls finish a three-game road trip at Marquette on Saturday, then return home to face Cincinnati on Feb. 16. Injured forward Gus Gilchrist, out since December with a sprained ankle, traveled to Notre Dame with the team but did not play, and should make his return at Marquette.
