Ole Miss guard Polynice to play at Seton Hall

Former Sarasota Booker and Ole Miss guard Eniel Polynice, who last month had said there was a "good chance" of him playing his final college season at USF, instead announced Wednesday he is transferring to Big East rival Seton Hall.

Polynice, who graduates this summer and can play immediately for the Pirates, had expressed an interest in finishing his college career close to home, but said he was won over by Seton Hall and new coach Kevin Willard. It's the second time this summer USF has lost out on a senior transfer to a Big East rival, as Memphis guard Roburt Sallie, who was not accepted into graduate school at USF, signed with Louisville.

Polynice would have brought much-needed experience to a very new USF backcourt, where only junior Anthony Crater has significant college experience. The Bulls will have three junior college transfers in wings Hugh Robertson and Jawanza Poland and point guard Shedrick Haynes, along with freshman point guard Lavonte Dority, with rising sophomores Mike Burwell and Shaun Noriega also competing for playing time. ... Guard commits to USF women's hoops for 2012

USF women's basketball coach Jose Fernandez, already ahead of the recruiting curve with two commitments for 2011, has moved even farther ahead, picking up a pledge this week from Shavontae Naylor, a rising junior at Southwest Atlanta Christian School.

"I wanted to play in Florida, and they're in the Big East. That type of opportunity doesn't come around easy," said Naylor, who was named co-MVP of USF's Elite basketball camp this weekend.

Naylor, a 5-foot-10 guard who will likely play shooting guard or small forward at USF, said she chose the Bulls over offers from Miami, Georgia, Georgia Tech and Auburn. After playing her freshman year at Ocala Forest, her family moved to Atlanta last summer -- she attends the same school that Magic star Dwight Howard went to -- his father Dwight Sr. is the school's athletic director. She has two more years before she'll get to USF, but said her commitment is firm.

Naylor said her strength is on defense, and Kenny Kallina, her coach with FGB (Florida Girls Basketball) said Fernandez has compared Naylor to former Bulls guard Rachael Sheats, another stout defender. ... Read more

USF pitching coach Collazo resigns

There's more offseason change for USF baseball, as pitching coach Lazer Collazo, a part of Lelo Prado's staff since his days at Louisville, has resigned to spend more time with his family.

"It's been 26 years that it's always been about me. It's time to dedicate time to my wife and kids," said Collazo, who is moving to Miami and said he did not expect to take another job coaching baseball.

Collazo, 46, helped cultivate two of the Big East's top pitchers in 2010 in juniors Randy Fontanez and Andrew Barbosa, who both were drafted this month but haven't signed with their pro teams. Barbosa has said he's returning for his senior year, and Prado has been optimistic Fontanez will do the same.

Prado said he told most of his pitchers Tuesday about Collazo's decision, and that he'll be missed by the Bulls after four seasons on staff.

"He did a good job for us. We wish him and his family the best of luck," Prado said. "We have a lot of guys who will miss him. Lazer brought a lot of energy to the team, but it's over and we have to move on." ... Read more

Woolard: New USF soccer stadium OK'd for '11

Few more nuggets and links to share this morning, and we'll start with notes from Monday's final "Around the Horns" dinner at Tampa Palms. USF athletic director Doug Woolard, who has been talking recently about adding a new $3.5-million soccer stadium to the ambitious package of facility upgrades, said Monday that he can now officially announce that USF has secured the funding to include soccer in this wave of construction.

That means USF soccer will have a new home immediately east of the athletic facility in time for its 2011 fall season. Woolard is saying that all the construction -- new stadiums for baseball and softball, the Muma Center practice facility for basketball and new practice fields for football -- will be completed by a year from now.

-- In talking about the "Iron Bulls" -- USF's top tier of supporters who donate at least $10,000 a year to the athletic department -- Woolard proudly introduced the newest member of the group: football coach Skip Holtz. Holtz said his wife Jennifer deserves to have her name on the list. ... Read more

Holtz on Griffin: 'He'll play for us this season'

There is good news and bad news to update on the ankle injury suffered by USF sophomore receiver Sterling Griffin on Monday morning. First, the bad news: Griffin dislocated his ankle and fractured the bottom of his fibula during a voluntary workout, in an injury that sent him to the hospital.

The good news: USF coach Skip Holtz said he fully expects Griffin to recover in time to play for the Bulls this fall, perhaps for a good part of the season.

"He's going to be a while, and we don't know the extent of it all at this point," Holtz said. "The bone is a six-to-eight week deal, right about the beginning of the season. I don't know how much damage (there is) until some of the swelling (goes down), but very definitely, he'll play for us this season." ... Read more

Bulls receiver Griffin injures ankle in workout

USF sophomore receiver Sterling Griffin, expected to contend for a starting role this fall, injured his ankle during voluntary workouts on campus Monday.

The severity of the injury isn't known, but an ambulance was called to the practice fields east of USF's athletic facility, and Griffin was taken to the hospital for X-rays. Tampa Fire Rescue confirmed that an ambulance responded at 9:20 a.m. to a call about a sprained ankle.

Monday marked the first day of classes for the Summer B semester and the first day of college classes for most Bulls newcomers. During summer classes, players have their own informal workouts without pads on -- position coaches cannot supervise workouts until the start of fall practice the first week in August. ... Read more

Recruiting: Sebring DE Bullock commits to USF

USF coach Skip Holtz continues to build on his 2011 recruiting class, picking up the Bulls' fifth commitment, from Sebring defensive end/linebacker Zack Bullock.

Bullock, 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, has played mostly at defensive end at Sebring, but could start his Bulls career as a linebacker until he adds more to his frame.

"I think they're going to try to use me as a hybrid, as a third-down pass-rushing defensive end," said Bullock, who said he committed to Bulls coaches nine days ago, two days after getting a scholarship offer.

Bullock chose the Bulls over offers from Iowa State and Western Kentucky, and he's excited about the chance to play college football in a major conference just 90 minutes from home.

"At all the home games, my family gets to come see me play," he said. "And I love the coaching staff. I really wanted to be there. It's big-time Division I football and you're playing in an NFL stadium." ... Read more

Heintz leaves Twins to be Bulls' hitting coach

Former USF star and major-leaguer Chris Heintz has left his new job as manager of the Gulf Coast League Twins to return to the Bulls as Lelo Prado's hitting coach.

Heintz, 35, made his managing debut just Monday, winning his debut but losing the next five games. He reached the majors with the Twins as a catcher in 2005, playing 34 games over the next three seasons. He retired in 2008 and moved into coaching last summer, spending the second half of the season as the hitting coach of the Beloit Snappers, another Twins affiliate.

"We had a number of good candidates for this position, but Chris Heintz stood out above them all," Prado said in a statement. "Our players will benefit from his experience in professional baseball, both as a player and a coach. Chris has a good demeanor and will be a great teacher. And most importantly, he is an alumnus of the program. He is passionate about USF baseball, and he will make an immediate impact on our program."

Prado had an opening after his batting coach of four years, Bryant Ward, left to take the same job at Loyola Marymount in California. ... Read more
