Pierre-Paul signs $20-million deal with Giants
It's not quite the biggest contract ever signed by a former USF football player, but it's still a huge day for defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, the first-round draft pick who signed Saturday with the New York Giants. According to NFL.com and ESPN.com, he signed a five-year deal worth $20-million, with $11.6-million guaranteed.
The only bigger contract for a USF player was the $25-million deal that cornerback Anthony Henry signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 2005, which included a $10-million signing bonus. Pierre-Paul is the last of five USF draft picks to sign, and gets his deal done in time to report with the rest of the team for preseason camp, which starts Sunday.
Receiver Alcin transferring to Fort Hays State
USF senior receiver Ed Alcin, who has struggled to get on the field in four years with the Bulls, will play his final season of college football at Division II Fort Hays State in Kansas.
Alcin, who is graduating from USF this summer, will be reunited with his receivers coach from Chamberlain High, Al McCray, who is now the receivers coach at Fort Hays and confirmed the transfer on Saturday. McCray has had good luck with his former players -- former Middleton star O.J. Murdock, who started his college career at South Carolina, is also at Fort Hays and led the team with eight touchdown receptions last season.
Alcin should have a much easier time getting on the field at Fort Hays -- he totaled four catches for 48 yards with the Bulls, including one catch for 5 yards last season. Even with depth issues at receiver -- Carlton Mitchell skipped his senior year to enter the NFL draft, and A.J. Love (knee) and Sterling Griffin (ankle) are recovering from serious offseason injuries -- he wasn't likely to see significant playing time for the Bulls. ... Read more
Links: McKenzie making splash with Patriots
After missing his rookie season with a knee injury, former USF linebacker Tyrone McKenzie has turned heads already as the Patriots open preseason camp, thanks to a monster hit on running back Laurence Maroney on Friday.
The buzz surrounding his tackle was enough to lead notebooks in the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald, and the Worcester Telegram writes that he's making a case to be a starter at inside linebacker. Patriots.com writes that McKenzie's hit was "reminiscent of Ted Johnson's heyday."
-- USF football coach Skip Holtz is pleased by the turnout for the Bulls' first Ladies Clinic, which is being held today in the Sun Dome, with more than 200 women signed up for the daylong event. ... Read more
His name is Boo: Alabama OT commits to USF
If there was something glaringly missing from USF's first eight oral commitments for 2011, it was size, as none of the future Bulls weighed in at more than 205 pounds. That changed Friday as David "Boo" Simon, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive tackle from Bay Minette, Ala., committed to the Bulls during a campus visit, his father confirmed Friday night.
Simon had 12 scholarship offers, as impressive academically as they are from a football standpoint, with Stanford and Vanderbilt among his top suitors, along with Maryland and Mississippi State. He's rated as a three-star recruit by both Scout.com and Rivals.com, with the latter ranking him as the nation's No. 63 offensive tackle. He's a rare out-of-state recruit for the Bulls, but Bay Minette is only about an hour northwest of Pensacola, so he won't be too far from home. ... Read more
Here you go: My Big East picks, and yours
For those of you who missed today's live chat, I rolled out my Big East preseason ballot from the league's annual preseason media poll. Three journalists covering each team get ballots, and the Times has a policy where writers are only allowed to vote in such things if they disclose their ballots publicly. The whole media poll will be unveiled Tuesday morning at 9:30 in Newport, R.I., and we'll be busy blogging from Rhode Island on Monday and Tuesday.
Wasn't easy, but here are my picks for the Big East in 2010:
8. Syracuse
7. Louisville
6. Rutgers
5. Connecticut
4. USF
3. West Virginia

LB Glen Stanley chooses FSU over USF
USF missed out on another potential late addition to its football team as junior college linebacker Glen Stanley, who had USF in his final two after being released from his letter of intent to USC, told ESPN.com he'll play at Florida State this fall.
Stanley had talked about visiting USF on Friday, but the Bulls never got a release to speak with the well-traveled linebacker, who played at Bowling Green and Eastern Arizona before signing with USC and had expressed an interest in staying close to family in Ocala. USF coach Skip Holtz will announce all of his new additions and departures on Wednesday afternoon when the Bulls report for preseason camp.

Former USF punter Alvarado cut by Cowboys
With many NFL preseason camps opening up this week and the last remaining draft picks signing, undrafted rookies are losing their roster spots, and former USF punter Delbert Alvarado has been released by the Dallas Cowboys.
The Bulls still have 13 former players on NFL rosters going into camp, and it's reasonable to think that at least half should make the final cuts for the upcoming NFL season: veterans Mike Jenkins (Cowboys), Kawika Mitchell (Bills), Stephen Nicholas (Falcons) are almost assured of spots, as are high draft picks Jason Pierre-Paul (Giants), Nate Allen (Eagles) and Jerome Murphy (Rams).
Rookies Carlton Mitchell (Browns) and George Selvie (Rams) and second-year linebacker Tyrone McKenzie (Patriots) should stick as well, but others face tougher odds -- returning players with limited experience like Marc Dile (Bucs), Chad Simpson (Bills) and Taurus Johnson (Dolphins), and undrafted rookie Kion Wilson (Chargers). Veteran cornerback Anthony Henry remains a free agent, unsigned after playing last season with Detroit. ... Read more
Friday: Chat live with Greg Auman
We've bumped a scheduled live chat twice now, but barring any out-of-nowhere surprises -- that's a big if this week -- I'll be doing a live chat here Friday at noon to talk about the upcoming football season and, yes, Thursday's news of fired academic adviser Myrtice Landers accusing USF of racial discrimination and covering up NCAA violations.
Lots of leftover notes on the Landers case and other things, so here are a few quick hitters to get out of the way ...
-- Former USF safety and graduate assistant J.R. Reed, who stepped down from his USF job to returning to playing in the UFL, still has one eye on his coaching future and is taking part in the NFL's minority internship program and working with the Baltimore Ravens this summer. He'll be working with Baltimore until Aug. 16, when he reports to the Florida Tuskers for UFL preseason camp in Orlando. ... Read more
More news on racial, NCAA allegations against USF
We've updated our main story on today's allegations from a fired academic adviser against USF's athletic department of racial discrimination and covering up NCAA violations, following Myrtice Landers' news conference this morning in Palm Harbor.
Landers has addressed some issues raised this morning -- she said athletic director Doug Woolard told her when USF changed associate athletic directors for academics that her "slate was wiped clean," which she took to mean that a previous "final warning" from Woolard that any transgressions could cost her her job was no longer in place. She's not going into any detail about what other NCAA violations may have taken place at USF, but her attorney -- and Jim Leavitt's -- says they'll be talking to the NCAA.
