Your USF captains: Genus, Williams, Raymond
Times correspondent Kerry Klecic -- follow him on Twitter at @kmklecic -- checks in with notes from Tuesday's practice ...
TAMPA -- On Tuesday afternoon, USF defensive coordinator Mark Snyder said senior defensive back Mistral Raymond fit perfectly into his system, citing his versatility to move around the secondary.
But that wasn't the only accolades Raymond, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship this year, received.
After the Bulls' evening practice, Raymond was solidified as one of USF's best leaders, being named a team captain along with two others -- senior center Sampson Genus and senior outside linebacker Jacquian Williams.
"That's a great honor, to be selected by my peers as a captain with everything we're trying to get done here," said Raymond, who is also expected to start at cornerback Saturday in the opener against Stony Brook. "I'm going to do everything in my power to hold myself accountable for everything going on around here." ... Read more
Four freshmen will play; what about T-Rex?
Lots of news and notes to share from USF's first media luncheon of the season -- little different format this year with no player access, but we were able to talk with assistants and Skip Holtz, with players available after tonight's practice.
First up, the ever-changing list of true freshmen expected to play got another tweak, as Holtz said that four freshmen are now locks to play -- running back Marcus Shaw, safety Mark Joyce, and two walk-ons: quarterback Bobby Eveld and receiver Stephen Bravo-Brown. It's curious that cornerback Terrence "T-Rex" Mitchell, who I'd have thought was most likely to take the field, is among four players Holtz said were "on the bubble," along with receiver Deonte Welch, tackle Quinterrius Eatmon and quarterback Jamius Gunsby.
The Mitchell deal could be entirely motivational -- if the Bulls were somehow able to redshirt him, it would say a lot about their confidence in the depth of the secondary, but I really think you'll see him on the field Saturday, if not on the opening kickoff. ... Read more
Former RB Ford signs with CFL's Argonauts
Hurrying over to USF's weekly media luncheon to talk with coaches, but the CFL's Toronto Argonauts have confirmed that former USF running back Mike Ford has been signed to the team's practice squad.
Ford, dismissed from USF for a violation of team rules this spring, is one of seven players on the practice squad, and can be elevated to the Argos' 46-man active roster. The CFL is midway through its 2010 season. Ford had his best game as a Bull in the Rogers Centre in Toronto, home of the Argonauts, rushing for 207 yards to lead USF to a 27-3 rout of Northern Illinois in the International Bowl in January.
More to come this afternoon ...
Two commits: LB Pozniak, OL Gudmundsson
If he keeps up this pace, USF coach Skip Holtz won't have to do much recruiting at all in December and January. The Bulls have picked up two more commitments -- making 14 total, and nine since the start of July -- with the additions of linebacker Antoine Pozniak of East Syracuse, N.Y., and offensive lineman Brynjar Gudmundsson of Wellington, just west of West Palm Beach.
Let's start with pronunciations -- it's ANT-wan POZZ-nee-ak and BRIN-yar GUDD-mon-son, and thanks to their current coaches for the help there. Pozniak is perhaps the first sign of Holtz turning to one of his old East Carolina pipelines, as Pozniak, who will enroll at USF in January, is playing this fall at Oak Ridge Military Academy near Greensboro, N.C., a program where coach Otis Yelverton has two former players on the current ECU roster.
"Antoine has a great work ethic -- you don't have anyone down there who will work harder," Yelverton said. "He lives in the weight room. The guy is built like Tarzan, real cut up. He knows he has the opportunity of a lifetime to play for Skip Holtz at South Florida." ... Read more
Transfers, QB among new USF walk-ons
Given that seven former walk-ons are now on scholarship with USF football, there's a certain amount of news -- perhaps long-term news -- in announcing the names of nine walk-ons added to Skip Holtz's Bulls roster, allowing him to use the full 115 players as he prepares for Saturday's opener against Stony Brook.
Still gleaning new morsels of information on the new names, but we can report that one of them has solid experience against Stony Brook, strange as that may seem. Daryl Ash, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker from Matt Grothe's high school, Lake Gibson, played last season at Presbyterian College, a I-AA program in South Carolina that went 0-11 last season. Ash had 43 tackles as a true freshman, good for sixth on the team, including a season-high seven against, yes, Stony Brook, in a 52-14 loss to the Seawolves. And yes, Presbyterian's mascot is the Blue Hose, and we're sure opposing fans have a lot of fun with that. Ash will sit out this season, then should have three years of eligibility. ... Read more
Holtz: Freshman RB Shaw will play Saturday
Running back Marcus Shaw has been added to the list of true freshmen likely to play for the Bulls this season, as coach Skip Holtz said Monday that he's shown enough to be in the rotation for playing time.
"We've got a logjam," Holtz said on the Big East's weekly media teleconference. "Over the last two weeks, when you look at the job that (Bradley) Battles has done and (Demetris) Murray and even the young Marcus Shaw, they've put themselves in the mix. We've got four tailbacks that will all play and can all play. I look at four guys who are doing a nice job that all will play a role and I think all will play on Saturday." ... Read more
Video: Daniels eager to guide new offense
The last time B.J. Daniels stepped in as USF's starting quarterback, he didn't have much time to prepare himself after Matt Grothe's season-ending knee injury. Now, he's had eight months to prepare for leading the Bulls, and he's comfortable about his role in Todd Fitch's new offense, which should call for fewer designed running plays by him and more of a traditional passing role for him. We talked to him Sunday night about his excitement for the season ahead. ...
Video: Holtz doesn't have to wait much longer
Sunday night's bad weather kept the Bulls from practicing, and pushed Skip Holtz's usual interview session from the practice fields to the cavernous Hall of Fame area of USF's main athletic facility -- he's making fun of the acoustics in the room in the opening seconds before he starts his comments. Holtz doesn't have much experience against a I-AA opponent like the Bulls will face Saturday in Stony Brook, but he said his team couldn't possibly overlook the Seawolves after months of waiting. ...
Rain or shine, first game week is 'finally here'
TAMPA -- After months of preparation, USF coach Skip Holtz has a football game on his weekly schedule, and the lightning and heavy rains that canceled Sunday night's practice did nothing to take away from that.
"I think the players are very excited to get into game week. I know I am," Holtz said of Saturday's opener against I-AA Stony Brook. "It's been eight months waiting, so it's finally here. Whether we're good enough or not is irrelevant. We have what we have and we are where we are. All we can do is continue to polish those things up and get ready to play. I'm really excited to get started."
Playing host to a I-AA opponent is common practice for colleges in major conferences, but it's relatively new for Skip Holtz, who faced just one in his five seasons at East Carolina.
"I was used to strapping it up and saying, 'All right, we're opening with Virginia Tech.' It created an excitement in camp and an energy," Holtz said. "But I'm excited about this, because it gives us an opportunity to see where we are as a football team." ... Read more
