Bulls announce hiring of Hiller, King

Barring another late departure, USF's latest football staff shakeup was completed Friday with the official announcement that former Bucs QB Shaun King and former Cincinnati offensive line coach Darren Hiller have come aboard.

As a result of King's arrival, former quarterbacks coach David Reaves becomes associate head coach/tight ends coach, and will keep a role in offensive game planning. Hiller replaces Danny Hope, who stepped down after one highly successful season for family reasons.

David Gilbertson, last year's tight ends coach, is moving to an off-field role. Coach Willie Taggart remains the primary play-caller.

"We took some great strides forward offensively last season and broke several school records," Taggart said in a USF news release. "We are not satisfied though, and I am always evaluating where we can get better and reach our full potential.

"We have a very talented and committed coaching staff and a new mix of energy, enthusiasm and experience to lead our players, and I look forward to seeing the results on the field.”

A California native and former guard at West Texas A&M, Hiller's 20-year coaching career includes three seasons (2013-15) at Cincinnati. During that span, the Bearcats posted the three best offensive seasons -- at least statistically -- in program history (23rd, 27th and sixth nationally in total offense).

King's candidacy for the USF staff first was reported by the Tampa Bay Times eight days ago. The Gibbs High alumnus, who quarterbacked the Bucs to the 2000 NFC title game, recently has served as an NFL and college analyst for Yahoo while coaching locally.

In recent years, he has worked with the nationally heralded Team Tampa 7-on-7 squad, and has coached quarterbacks at Gibbs.

“Shaun was a highly successful dual-threat quarterback in both college (at Tulane) and the NFL and I think he will help take our passing game to the next level,” Taggart said. “I love Shaun’s energy, passion and understanding of the passing game. Our players will really respond to his coaching and he’ll be a great addition to our staff.”
