Transfer golfer Miller wins title in Bulls debut

USF's women's golf team got a promising debut from Mississippi transfer Christina Miller, who won the Golfweek Program Challenge individual title Tuesday after shooting a final round of 66 in South Carolina.

Miller showcased USF's new depth, finishing first overall at 3 under par, with another transfer, former Furman golfer Brie Heinzler, taking second among the Bulls, who finished fifth as a team. USF junior Shena Yang, who was the low finisher in all 10 tournaments for the Bulls last season, took third for USF and 29th overall.

Miller, from Bradenton, gave the Bulls their first individual title since Yang won the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge in March. The Bulls have this weekend off before competing at the Nittany Lion Invitational at Penn State next weekend.

USF's men's team finished in a tie for second in the same event in South Carolina, with freshmen Branden Collins and Trey Valentine tying for fourth individually in their Bulls debuts.

USF back at .500 after home win against Stetson

USF baseball jumped out to an early lead and used strong pitching to take a 5-2 home win Tuesday night against Stetson, which came in ranked as high as No. 18 in the national rankings.

The Bulls (18-18) are back at .500 entering a pivotal three-game Big East series at Louisville, which starts Thursday night. Stetson (29-8) had beaten USF 9-0 in the teams' first meeting, but saw a nine-game winning streak come to an end.

Zach Pietrzyk (3-1) pitched three scoreless innings in his first start of the season, and USF's bullpen held up well, holding Stetson to three hits over the final six innings. Shortstop Sam Mende and outfielder James Ramsay had two RBIs each for the Bulls. Here's the full story from USF's official site, including video with Bulls coach Lelo Prado. ... Read more

With $35-million in facility upgrades wrapping up this summer and a major renovation of the Sun Dome about to begin, USF has another impressive piece of construction coming soon. The Bulls have secured a $1.3-million donation that will be used to build a state-of-the-art indoor golf facility for USF's men's and women's teams at the campus golf course, The Claw.

An official announcement on the donation is expected later this month, and the facility will include three indoor hitting bays, technology for video swing analysis, as well as new locker rooms and offices for players and staff. Quick USF notes from Around the Horns

First and foremost, a Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there. Hope everyone has a good weekend.

A few good notes from Friday's "Around the Horns" dinner at Bayou Club in Largo, which had a good showing for the Pinellas stop in USF's summer coaches tour ...

-- Athletic director Doug Woolard talked with excitement about the facility upgrades starting all over USF's athletic district this summer -- he said in talking with folks at HOK, an industry leader in sports architecture, they said they couldn't remember a single athletic department having more projects going at once than what USF has right now. Again, that's new baseball and softball stadiums for next spring, as well as a new basketball practice facility and new practice fields for football. He held two fingers up in the air in saying USF was "this close" in adding a soccer stadium to the package, as we reported this week. ... Read more

Baseball falls in ninth for fourth straight loss

Taking a 1-1 game into the ninth inning, USF gave up a two-out, two-run single in a 3-1 loss to Seton Hall on Friday night for the Bulls' fourth straight setback.

USF (19-24, 10-6) got a quality start from ace Randy Fontanez, but stuck with him in the ninth inning, even after he walked and hit the first two batters in a tie game. Fontanez got to two outs with runners at second and third, but Seton Hall's Will Walsh hit a two-run single for a 3-1 lead. Seton Hall (15-22-1, 5-11), which got eight strong innings of three-hit ball from starter Joe DiRocco, got a perfect ninth from reliever Benny Mejia to close out the win.

Two of USF's three hits came from sophomore Daniel Rockhold, who leads the Bulls with 14 RBIs in Big East play. All four of USF's recent losses have come at home, and the Bulls get another shot at the Pirates at 7 p.m. Saturday, with the series wrapping up Sunday at noon.

-- USF women's golf won two major Big East awards, as Marci Kornegay was honored as Big East Coach of the Year, and freshman Shena Yang was named Freshman of the Year. Yang and teammate Rachel Edwards were unanimous selections to the All-Big East team. ... Read more

USF golfer Yang to compete at NCAA regional

Yang One sport we've neglected here on the blog is women's golf, where USF finished second in the Big East championships in Palm Harbor last week, led by freshman phenom Shena Yang.

Yang learned Monday that she has earned a spot in the NCAA regional, one of three leading up to the NCAA championships. She'll compete on May 6-8 at Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, N.C. -- I'll nominate Skip Holtz if she needs a caddy who knows the course well. There are 24 teams and three individuals in the regional, and the top eight teams and the top two individuals not on those teams advance to the NCAA field, which is May 18-21 at Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. ...
