USF tennis alum Shumate named Fulbright Scholar

Former USF women's tennis player Lauren Shumate, now an intern in the Sixth Judicial Circuit in Clearwater, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to study and teach in Serbia, home of her maternal grandparents, the circuit announced Monday.

Shumate, 22, played tennis at USF from 2007-10 and has continued as a student assistant since her eligibility ended. She's also working toward a Master's degree in political science after earning her undergraduate degree in criminology with a 3.89 grade-point average. She'll teach English as a second language in Serbia as part of the Fulbright Scholarship Program, which promotes "mutual understanding between the citizens of the United States and the people of other countries."  ... Big East honors for USF tennis, softball

The Big East's spring postseason honors are rolling in, and USF is faring well, starting with tennis, where seniors Lucas Jovita and Irene Rehberger each earned a share of their respective Big East Player of the Year honors.

In all USF had six tennis players make the All-Big East teams -- Jovita on the men's side, along with Wael Kalani and Frederico Sabogal; then Rehberger on the women's side, along with Janette Bejlkova and Ecaterina Vasenina. USF's women finished second in the Big East tournament, losing to Notre Dame in the championship match, while USF's men took third.

In softball, USF saw freshman lefty Sara Nevins lose out on Big East Rookie of the Year, but she did make the first-team All-Big East, with fellow Bulls Lindsey Richardson, Gina Kafalas and Courtney Goff making the third team. ... Read more

USF women's tennis headed to NCAAs

Fresh off a second-place showing in the Big East championships, USF's women's tennis team has earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament, and the Bulls will open the tournament by facing Texas next weekend in Coral Gables.

USF has a familiar opponent in Texas -- the Bulls took a 5-2 loss to the Longhorns in Austin on Feb. 25, with the top three singles matches all going to a third set.

The Bulls (11-11) are the only team out of 33 at-large qualifiers that doesn't have a winning record -- they match Mississippi (11-10) with the fewest wins -- but USF's strength of schedule and ITA ranking (No. 41 nationally) were enough to get the Bulls in. Of USF's 11 losses, eight came against team in the current ITA top 20, with wins against No. 12 Ohio State and No. 20 Notre Dame. ... Read more

USF women's tennis finishes 2nd in Big East

USF's women's tennis team came up short Sunday, falling to Notre Dame 4-2 in the Big East championship finals, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a Bulls program to match the success women's tennis has had.

USF got a win at No. 1 singles from senior Irene Rehberger and at No. 3 singles from Janette Bejlkova, but lost the remaining matches on Notre Dame's home courts. In six seasons in the Big East, USF has reached the women's tennis final four times, winning in 2007 and losing three other times to Notre Dame.

USF women's tennis goes for Big East crown today

USF women's tennis goes for the Bulls' first Big East championship of the year this morning, facing Notre Dame on its home courts in the finals of the conference tournament.

The Bulls earned a 5-2 victory against Notre Dame in Tampa in March and have played well in the Big East tournament, earning a 4-1 win against Syracuse and a 4-0 sweep of DePaul to reach the finals. USF's regular-season upset of the Fighting Irish saw the Bulls' top two singles players, Irene Rehberger and Ecaterina Vasenina, upset higher-ranked opponents.

It's the third time in six years that USF and Notre Dame have met for the Big East women's tennis crown -- the Bulls won USF's first Big East crown in 2007 in Tampa, beating Notre Dame, and the Bulls lost to the Fighting Irish in the championship matches in 2006 and 2008.

USF moves up slightly to 105th in Directors' Cup

Call it slow progress for USF's athletic department, which has moved up in the national all-sports Directors' Cup, going from 116th a year ago to 105th in the 2009-10 standings.

The ranking, which is based on success in all NCAA postseason events, still shows USF as the fifth-lowest school among the 66 BCS football programs, but the Bulls made up a little bit of ground after being third-to-last a year ago. USF was 12th in the Big East last year and has moved up to 10th, passing Pittsburgh and staying ahead of Cincinnati among the league's football schools.

USF's points came from four teams -- men's soccer and football in the fall and men's track and women's tennis this spring, with soccer and women's tennis getting the highest point totals. USF has had as many as nine teams score points, when the Bulls finished their highest, 59th overall, in 2001. ... Read more
