NFL: Marshall-Giants, Gidrey-'Skins, Bedford-Colts

USF football's class of 2011, which had three players drafted, now has five signing free-agent deals to go to NFL camps this week, the latest being defensive end Craig Marshall to the Giants, tight end Kevin Gidrey to the Redskins and defensive end David Bedford to the Colts.

Marshall will be reunited with former teammates Jason Pierre-Paul and Jacquian Williams (and NFL veteran Stephen Nicholas could be joining them in New York), and Gidrey gets a shot with the team he knew best growing up in Virginia Beach.

"All you heard was Redskins," said Gidrey, who came to USF with Skip Holtz for his final college season after graduating from East Carolina. "It was a blessing to get the call from them today."

Gidrey has worked hard to keep in shape in the seven months since USF's season ended -- he's still at 245 pounds, about where he played at for the Bulls. Bedford, impressively, is the third USF defensive lineman from last year's team to earn a spot in an NFL camp, joining Marshall and defensive tackle Terrell McClain, who was drafted by the Panthers. ... Bulls rally, get first Big East win vs. Friars

TAMPA -- With a string of near-misses that had built up into a seven-game losing streak, it looked like USF might need divine intervention to get its first Big East win. Turns out, the Bulls just needed a little Providence.

Trailing the Friars by 17 in the first half and 12 at the break, the Bulls rallied in nearly the opposite of their standard storyline, saving their best basketball for the end of a 79-72 victory before a crowd of 3,526 in the Sun Dome.

"I do think our team needed confidence, confidence that they could finish a game, confidence they could win a game in the Big East," coach Stan Heath said. "You can only be close so many times, and it just drains you. Now guys feel good about themselves tonight. ... The focus will be a little better, and that momentum will carry into our next game."

USF (7-12, 1-5) has won three straight against the Friars (11-8, 0-6), just the third time in six Big East seasons they've beaten a team three in a row. They won with balanced scoring and solid free-throw shooting, going 8-for-8 at the line in the final minute. ... Read more

USF settles Leavitt lawsuit for $2.75-million

TAMPA -- One year and three days after he was fired, USF reached a settlement with former USF football coach Jim Leavitt, paying him $2.75-million to resolve the wrongful termination suit he filed after his run as the Bulls' only head coach abruptly ended.

The settlement, announced Tuesday night by USF and Leavitt's attorney, Wil Florin, includes $2-million for "salary and benefits," as well as a payment of $750,000 "acknowledging Coach Leavitt's contributions to building USF's nationally respected football program." USF said in its release that "non-state resources" will be used to pay for the settlement.

"I'm grateful for the love and support of my family and all of the great people of Tampa Bay," Leavitt said in a statement. "I will always cherish my time at USF and what we built here together." ... Read more

Passing TDs vs. INTs: USF is last in BCS

There are three things we're hearing a lot about this week as the Bulls try to focus their attention on problem areas -- turnover margin, third down on offense and the passing game. Improve in those three areas, and USF will be in good position to reverse their current skid.

Just how bad are the Bulls in those areas? Consider the passing game in terms of passing touchdowns vs. interceptions -- as a plus-minus, USF has the worst out of 66 programs in BCS conferences, sitting at minus-5 (5 TDs, 10 INTs).  In all of Division I-A, only New Mexico (minus-6) and Middle Tennessee State (minus-8) are worse, though there are solid programs close to USF -- LSU, Penn State and Kentucky are all at minus-4. Friday's opponent Cincinnati, by comparison, is sitting at plus-14, with 17 TDs and just three interceptions -- the only schools in the nation with a better differential are USC and Boise State at plus-17 and Hawaii, which is a ridiculous plus-19. ... Fitch left booth before Daniels' pivotal INT

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Perhaps the most surprising part of B.J. Daniels’ costly interception in the final minute of the first half Thursday night was that offensive coordinator Todd Fitch didn’t see the play, having already left the press box to join the team at halftime.

USF had called a time out with 1:02 left and got the ball on its 13-yard line with 52 seconds left, and rather than go into halftime down 10-3 with the ball to open the second half, Daniels attempted a pass to receiver Evan Landi that was intercepted by West Virginia’s Robert Sands and returned 28 yards to the 7. West Virginia scored on the next play for a 17-3 halftime lead.

“It was a minute to go, defense had the ball,” Fitch said of his decision to leave the press box before the end of the half. “It’s a long walk here, to get down you have to hike here. We usually would come down in that situation because we have halftime. ... For me to critique his play wouldn't be fair because I didn't see the route.” ... Read more

Ex-Bulls RB Ford arrested again in Sarasota

Former USF running back Mike Ford has been arrested for the second time in four months in Sarasota, where police say he violated a protective injunction by leaving harassing messages by phone and on Facebook to the mother of his two children.

Ford, 24, was arrested Wednesday night and was released Thursday evening on $50,000 bond. He was arrested in June on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery against the same woman, Berneta Bean, though that charge was later dropped. According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, a Sarasota County Sheriff's Office report stated that Ford left a phone message in late September that "nothing would keep him from seeing his kids and that bad things would happen if he could not see them soon." One message written on Facebook.com stated that Ford did not care about a "petty" restraining order against him, the report said. ... Read more

Another UFL cut: Tuskers release safety Reed

Strange to have two UFL transaction notes in one day, but another USF alum was released on Monday, as the Florida Tuskers cut loose former Bulls safety J.R. Reed, who sprained his ankle in Monday's season-opening win against Las Vegas.

Reed, who had two tackles in the opener, said he'll be OK, but his stay in the UFL lasted just one game after he stepped down as a graduate assistant on Skip Holtz's USF staff this spring. Reed had returned to USF last fall, working with the Bulls defensive backs under coordinator Joe Tresey during the 2009 season.

It's the second prominent former Bull the Tuskers have cut loose, following quarterback Matt Grothe's release in the preseason.

Bulls get commitment from Georgia TE

With Kevin Gidrey, Andrew Ketchel and Richard Kelly all seniors this fall, USF will have significant turnover at the hybrid TE/FB position in the offseason, but the Bulls have addressed that position by picking up a commitment Wednesday night from Tye Turner, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound senior from Griffin, Ga.

"He's a big, athletic kid -- blocks well and catches the ball well," said Griffin coach Steve DeVoursney, who said Turner chose the Bulls over offers from Western Kentucky -- USF's next opponent -- and Western Carolina, along with interest from Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Turner, who carries a 3.7 grade-point average at Griffin and also plays basketball, played primarily fullback and H-back last season but is working as a tight end this fall, with three catches for 39 yards in his first two games. Griffin, located about 40 miles south of Atlanta, is undefeated and ranked as the No. 3 team in Georgia's Class 4A rankings. It's also the alma mater of Western Kentucky running back Bobby Rainey, who has rushed for 339 yards and three touchdowns in WKU's two lopsided losses. ... Read more

Video: Daniels eager to guide new offense

The last time B.J. Daniels stepped in as USF's starting quarterback, he didn't have much time to prepare himself after Matt Grothe's season-ending knee injury. Now, he's had eight months to prepare for leading the Bulls, and he's comfortable about his role in Todd Fitch's new offense, which should call for fewer designed running plays by him and more of a traditional passing role for him. We talked to him Sunday night about his excitement for the season ahead. ...

Walk-on Miller gets scholarship; Garvin gone

TAMPA -- On a day when thousands of Bulls fans gathered at Raymond James Stadium for pictures and autographs with players and coaches, Skip Holtz added a little news to the festivities by announcing that junior walk-on receiver Joel Miller, the player at the center of the incident that led to Jim Leavitt's dismissal, has been placed on scholarship starting this fall.

"He's a young man who has busted his rear end, played on special teams here. He's earned it. He's deserving," said Holtz, who already promoted two senior walk-ons, defensive back Mistral Raymond and linebacker Donte Spires, at the start of preseason camp.

Miller, who moved from running back to receiver last week, had seven special-teams tackles as a redshirt freshman in 2008, and four tackles last season while working on several special-teams units. Leavitt was fired in January after a USF investigation found that he grabbed Miller by the throat and slapped him twice in the face during halftime of USF's Nov. 21 game against Louisville; Leavitt has denied the charges and filed a wrongful termination suit against USF. ...
