Holtz on radio: Are Miami, BC better off in ACC?

USF coach Skip Holtz was on WDAE 620-AM on Tuesday morning, talking with Dan Sileo about a number of topics, including potential conference realignment.

Holtz initially said much of what he said during Monday's Big East coaches teleconference -- that the landscape is still changing and likely isn't done -- but had more pointed comments to make to Sileo, who played football at Miami.

"I think right now South Florida is positioned very strong. I think the Big East has been a very strong conference," Holtz said. "You would be the best one to ask for this: If you could go back, if you could turn back the clock, do you think it was a wise decision for Miami to leave the Big East?"

Sileo answered "no" to the question, and Holtz followed: "I can't answer for them, but I kind of imagine Boston College would say the same thing." ... Read more

Smith's advice: Don't shake Notre Dame players

Neither USF offensive coordinator Todd Fitch nor defensive coordinator Mark Snyder have ever coached a game at Notre Dame, but defensive backs coach Rick Smith has, going all the way back to 1977, when he was a young assistant at Georgia Tech.

"We were up 14-0 at the half," Smith recalled of the trip to South Bend under coach Pepper Rodgers. "One of our coaches grabbed a tight end he had recruited that went to Notre Dame, shook him and said we were going to kick their you-know-what. It wound up 60-something to 14."

It was actually 69-14, with Joe Montana himself routing Georgia Tech, which did lead 7-6 in the second quarter before Notre Dame opened the floodgates. The Fighting Irish's five touchdowns matched the most in school history back then, equaling a record set in 1944. ... Read more

Live blog: USF-Clemson football in Charlotte

Good morning from Charlotte, where USF will finish its first season under Skip Holtz at noon today against Clemson in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. As we have all year, we'll be live-blogging throughout the game -- technically, at some point, we will be able to report whether B.J. Daniels is getting the nod as starting quarterback, or whether Holtz is turning to freshman walk-on Bobby Eveld. Or alternating the two on every play/series/quarter. Stop by for answers to these and other questions ...

CB Washington impresses coaches with toughness

TAMPA -- USF defensive backs coach Rick Smith saw a toughness in starter cornerback Quenton Washington in Saturday's overtime win at Miami that fit right in with the junior's best game of the season.

A collision left Washington with three of his lower front teeth bent backwards into his mouth, but Washington didn't let that end his day, getting outfitted with a mouthpiece to keep the teeth in place and returning to the field. His deflection of a pass to Miami's Leonard Hankerson in the end zone forced Miami to settle for a field goal, keeping the Bulls within a touchdown late in the game.

"I'm shocked," Smith said of Washington's play. "I don't know if he can play any better than he's played the last two weeks. He has really played well. He's really showed some toughness, which is something he and I went round and round about in the spring.  Some days, he didn't feel like it. I'm shocked the way he's come around." ... Read more

USF LB Joseph embracing new role as senior

TAMPA -- In his five seasons at USF, Sabbath Joseph has played for three linebackers coaches, worked under three defensive coordinators and two head coaches. But for all the transitions he's made, the toughest might have come this fall, when he made the difficult move from an every-game starter in 2009 to a backup in his senior season.

Redshirt freshman DeDe Lattimore has played well in taking over as the Bulls' starting weakside linebacker, but as Joseph returns home to his native Miami on Saturday, he has handled his new role with maturity and success, piling up more unassisted tackles (27) off the bench this season than he totaled last year while starting 12 games. ... Solid execution led to 'euphoric' win for Bulls

CINCINNATI -- USF offensive coordinator Todd Fitch was smiling Friday night, of course because the Bulls had pulled off a 38-30 upset of Cincinnati, but as much because his offense had crisply executed a game plan designed to confront so many of the problems in USF’s two previous losses.

“The key was two things: We didn’t turn it over … and I thought (quarterback) B.J. (Daniels) had great command of the game, made pretty good decisions. We made some plays … That’s what we’ve been missing. It was good to see those guys step up and make those plays.”

USF (4-3) was outgained by Cincinnati 590-378, but the Bulls were able to prevail in part due to more efficient play in the red zone. USF only settled for a field goal once in four trips inside the 20, while the Bulls stiffened against Cincinnati (3-4), allowing just two touchdowns out of six red-zone trips.

“A lot of guys stepping up, and a lot of hard work that showed up today,” USF coach Skip Holtz said. “This didn’t happen overnight. I’m really proud of the resolve they’d had, the focus they’ve had, the competitive nature they’ve had. A lot of things have been disappointing, but you wouldn’t know it from them.” ... Read more

More of the same: Bulls fall to WVU, 20-6

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- USF's offensive struggles continued for another week, B.J. Daniels threw three more interceptions and the Bulls' defense couldn't do it all by itself, as the Bulls lost another Thursday night ESPN game, falling 20-6 at No. 25 West Virginia.

The Bulls have now gone two full games without an offensive touchdown, with only two Maikon Bonani field goals to show for Thursday's effort.

"We've got to put some points up. We're playing way too well on defense. They deserve better," coach Skip Holtz said after the Bulls dropped to 0-2 in Big East play for the first time in six seasons in the league. "Our offense right now is not very productive. It's bad. It really is."

The Bulls (3-3, 0-2) now have eight days to prepare for another difficult Big East road test next Friday at Cincinnati. West Virginia (5-1, 1-0) was a team USF had owned, winning three of the previous four, but that magic wasn't there on Thursday night. ... Read more

Video: Holtz says Gators weren't that bad

We'll start off with a link to a story in Wednesday's Times about defensive end Ryne Giddins, who chose the Bulls over the Gators last year and got the ball rolling on a huge recruiting class for USF. Plus this week's USF notebook, which includes a note on USF safety Jerrell Young going to Gainesville for an official visit in 2005 -- he might have been a Gator if they hadn't wanted him to be a running back.

Now for more Skip Holtz video -- he went a full 15 minutes just in recapping Stony Brook and previewing Florida today, giving a position-by-position breakdown including our first chance to see which players joined the "victor's club" by grading out as a "winner." More on that later, but here's his thoughts about Florida -- as unimpressive as the Gators were against Miami (Ohio), he can rattle off a bunch of stats that seem pretty impressive. ... USF FanFest 2010: Tell us your stories ...

Lots of notes to come from today's FanFest at Raymond James Stadium, and thanks much to so many of you who came up and introduced yourself on the field this afternoon. Looked like a strong turnout comparable to last year's 4,000-plus fans, this despite being on a Sunday instead of Saturday and rain everywhere but the stadium this afternoon.

You guys have already started on other threads, but please share your stories from FanFest -- who did you meet, what did they say, give us all the fun details. Skip Holtz will have his right hand on ice after signing autographs for more than three hours in the end zone. So tell us how it went for you, and we'll have notes posted in a few minutes. Here's a short video showing the line to see Holtz.
